The Montgomery Conservation Commission approved spending up to $500 to purchase fruit and nut trees for the Town Land and agreed to pursue conservation planning with outside partners.
At the Nov. 5 meeting, Matt Paggi, an MCC member, moved to allocate up to $500 to replace dead fruit and nut trees once surviving specimens are identified in spring 2026; Cliff Loos seconded the motion and all members present voted in favor. Commission members reported a site visit on Oct. 14 with Charlie Hancock and Dorothy Kinney-Landis of the Franklin County Natural Resources Conservation District (FCNRCD) and said they will wait until spring to identify surviving trees and to brush-hog the remainder of the parcel. FCNRCD is applying for a grant to fund a Town Land management plan, and the commission agreed it will invite Remy Crettol of the Vermont River Conservancy to a spring meeting for a conservation discussion and Q&A.
Commissioner Joan Hildreth described features she observed during a recent visit to Brownway in Enosburg that could be adapted at the Town Land—kiosk information panels, benches, bird houses and child-oriented story boards. Members said they hope a formal management plan from FCNRCD will clarify next steps for habitat features, public access and long-term stewardship.
