Houston County approves vehicle purchases, two department hires and declares surplus items

Commissioner Gottwals presented several procurement and personnel items on March 17 that the Board approved unanimously.
The Board approved a $51,635 purchase from Donohoo Chevrolet for one in-stock 2026 Chevy Tahoe PPV for the Sheriff's Patrol Division and a $57,047 purchase from Phil Brannen Ford for a 15-passenger Transit to support the Extension Office. Both purchases are funded from the 2018 SPLOST. The Board also approved hiring Antwon Solomon as Equipment Operator at the Landfill (Grade 10 Step B) and Jason Allen as Network/Systems Engineer in MIS (Grade 25 Step B), both effective March 18, 2026. Additionally, the commissioners declared a 2008 Ford F-350 and a 2018 Kubota tractor surplus to be sold on GovDeals and approved payment of bills totaling $9,049,774.52.
Chair members noted growing Extension Office participation among youth as a rationale for the van purchase and personnel vetting by Human Resources for the hires was reported in the minutes.
