Board hears athletics report as participation shifts and safety measures discussed

Athletics staff told the board that participation varies by sport and that football participation is down at both middle and high school levels. Justin Ward said the district is "working to advertise athletics more through social media" and partnering with the Vernonia Boosters on recruitment and grants. The Clay Target team sent six students to a recent competition where Nova Gleason finished 3rd in the female division and Jonathon Swart finished 5th in the male division.
Staff are exploring new helmets to reduce concussions and suggested youth clinics, theme nights and a Jan. 9 chili feed to boost attendance. Ward also reported they are seeking a baseball head coach and exploring constructing an outdoor batting cage in collaboration with the CTE program; board members noted the track will need resurfacing in the next couple of years and suggested setting aside funds annually.
