Vernonia reports gains in reading and graduation metrics; math proficiency lags

Superintendent Jim Helmen presented district academic data and board members discussed recent assessment trends at the Dec. 11 meeting. STAR reading proficiency rose from 38.4% (Fall 2022–23) to 51% (Fall 2025–26), and STAR math proficiency increased from 15.7% to 24.1% in the same span, per the superintendent's report. The district also reported stronger results compared with peers in Grade 3 ELA, Grade 8 Math, on-track-to-graduate, on-time graduation and five-year graduation measures.
Helmen noted that high-school math results had declined in recent years largely because the district lacked a highly qualified math teacher during that period and said science results are beginning to improve. Board members flagged regular attendance as an area for improvement; the district goal for regular attenders remains 70%.
