Rebecca told commissioners that, by statute and customary practice, a tentative budget must be published and that a public hearing held in the evening allows public attendance. She said the county would need the tentative budget to the newspaper by Monday for a 10-day advertisement window and confirmed the special hearing is scheduled for June 26 at 5:30 p.m.
The chair and commissioners agreed this allows time for liaisons to follow up with component units and for staff to update payroll and carryover figures before finalizing the advertised tentative budget. “It has to be a special meeting in the evening so that the public can attend if they want to,” Rebecca said.
Why it matters: legal advertising and public-hearing requirements set deadlines for the board to resolve outstanding budget decisions; the June 26 hearing is the board’s next formal opportunity to adopt or amend the tentative budget.
