Suffield board approves farm machinery exemption but leaves 25% late-filing penalty intact

Jeannine Cairl of 634 Bridge Street appealed for a farm machinery exemption on personal property, saying she believed her filing had been submitted online. Chair Edward G. McAnaney swore in appellants and explained the process. The Board determined that while the exemption/declaration could be approved, it lacked authority to waive the 25% late-filing penalty required by state statute.
Member Krystal Holmes moved to approve Cairl’s appeal and declaration without waiving the penalty; Norman Noble seconded and the motion passed 3-0. The board will issue a written decision to Ms. Cairl in the coming weeks.
