City administrator removes GFL contract from agenda after staff secures temporary price extension

The city administrator announced that staff removed consideration of a proposed agreement with GFL (Green for Life) from the posted agenda after securing a temporary price extension from the contractor.
"We received word just yesterday that they would agree to extending the 1.7% annual increase…so for '26, '27, and '28, if we would agree to a 5 year contract that then in '29 and '30 had 2.5% annual increases," City Administrator Wagner said during her report. Wagner said staff viewed that as a favorable rate compared with recent CPI averages and will bring an updated agreement to the board at the next meeting or the first meeting in July.
Wagner also told the board street crews responded to localized high water after heavy rainfall and highlighted community events including the Smithville Lake Festival parade on Saturday, June 14 (lineup 09:30 at Smithville High School) and the upcoming Citizens Academy application deadline of July 7. The removal of the GFL agreement means the board did not act on a new trash contract tonight; staff described the change as a result of recent negotiations with the vendor and said a revised contract will be presented later.
