District leaders presented longitudinal assessment data and told the Vernonia SD 47J board that students’ reading and science outcomes have improved over the past three years, while attendance remains a significant weakness.
“Does anyone see that and it kinda jumps out at you?” a staff presenter asked the board while showing state-report comparisons, then pointed to attendance and asked, “What if we increased our attendance by 10%, 15%? What is the impact on our student learning then?” The presentation cited gains in third‑grade reading and 8th‑grade science and stressed the district’s goal to reach “70, 70, 90” benchmarks for performance.
Board members and administrators discussed drivers and responses: curriculum alignment, strategies to standardize instructional practice K–5, targeted interventions, mentorship for new math teachers and partnerships to boost engagement. The report named several supports funded or planned through district resources and grant opportunities, including instructional assistants and college‑and‑career readiness work in CTE classes.
Officials said they will publicize the full Oregon report‑card data to families and that the district continues to use STAR and Smarter Balanced comparisons to monitor year‑to‑year progress. No board action was taken on instructional changes at the meeting; the discussion was presented as information to guide future planning.
