The Galesburg Planning & Zoning Commission voted to approve PZ241101, a zoning amendment to change the parcel at 40 East Simmons Street (the former library) from I (institutional) to B3 (central business). Chair moved to approve the item and the motion passed with eight ayes.
Steve, a city planning staff member, told the commission the 2019 comprehensive plan designates the area for downtown mixed use and that adjacent parcels already carry B3 zoning. He said the development review committee reviewed the request on Nov. 6 and recommended approval, and that the item is anticipated to go to city council on Dec. 2 for first reading and Dec. 16 for final reading.
Noelle Thompson, director of the Galesburg Public Library, was sworn in and told the commission the library owns the building and the lot to the east and "we do plan to sell the building." She said further steps are needed before listing, including possible adjustments to the adjacent city-owned parking lot to create a legal description for sale. "I'm happy to answer any questions you have, but we do plan to sell the building," Thompson said.
The commission's approval advances the rezoning to the city council; staff indicated the council will consider the ordinance on the dates staff announced. The record includes the petition number PZ241101 as the commission action taken at this meeting.
