A resident urged the Galesburg City Council to name a street after the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and called on local candidates to be specific about homelessness plans and the costs those plans would require.
"It's time that this council and this community demonstrate its resolve, a commitment toward building a community that's just," the resident said during public comment, urging civic courage despite possible controversy. Vince Marola, who identified himself as a Ward 7 resident, told the council he supported the naming idea and suggested pairing such an honor with plans for a proposed community center to underscore the city's commitment to inclusion.
The comments came during the public-comment period; no council action on a naming proposal was proposed at the meeting. Speakers also urged candidates running for office to include concrete policy proposals on their campaign literature, especially on homelessness, noting that meaningful services will require funding.
