Urban farm grant recipients praise city program; candidate says he will expand it

DeMarcus Medley, an urban farm grant recipient, told the council the program "basically saved our farm" and argued it creates local jobs, increases food security, supports educational programs and keeps resources in the community. "By showing that farmer can be both profitable and impactful, we are cultivating the next generation of agricultural leaders," Medley said, and added he is running for Alderman in Ward 6 to fight for more programs like the grant initiative.
Alex Stiebold, speaking on behalf of Libby's Corner project recipients, said grant funds have been spent locally and brought community volunteers together to create a public apple orchard that serves as an entryway landmark. He pointed to purchases at local businesses and volunteer partnerships with organizations such as the Girl Scouts, the Galesburg Public Library and Knox College.
Council members thanked the recipients and suggested scheduling staff presentations on urban-grant outcomes so council can ask questions and better understand program details in future meetings.
