The Galesburg City Council unanimously approved an agreement granting the National Railroad Hall of Fame and its designees access to city-owned property at 225 South Seminary Street so the group's design team can begin work on a proposed new building.
City Manager Mr. Hansen told the council the Hall of Fame "publicly announced last fall that they had enough money raised to begin working toward the design of the new building," and the proposed location is on city property southwest of the Amtrak station. "This agreement will allow the Hall of Fame design team to access the property by the city and the Hall of Fame work toward a formal lease agreement for the property," Hansen said. Council members offered praise for the long-running effort to bring the Hall of Fame to Galesburg.
Mayor Schwartzman said the development has been nearly two decades in the making and credited local volunteers and outside support. With no council objections, the measure passed on a 6–0 vote.
The agreement is limited to site access and design activities; staff said a future formal lease or other development approvals would be required before construction or long-term occupancy.
