The Coconino County Board of Supervisors on July 21 received a briefing from county elections staff and voted unanimously to receive the county canvas of the July 21 primary election and direct its transmission to the Arizona Secretary of State.
"We're here to canvass the election," Chair Patrice Horstman said at the start of the special meeting. Elections staff provided a large packet of supporting documents and described the county's post-election checks, including bipartisan hand counts and logic-and-accuracy testing.
County Recorder Sonderager summarized outreach and ballot operations, noting expanded voter-registration drives and a mobile unit that staffed chapter houses on the Navajo and Hopi Nations. Elections Director Maslir Musa told supervisors the county had 86,421 registered voters and reported turnout slides showing a lower primary turnout than recent comparable years. Musa also described tabulation progress and post-election audits.
Board members asked clarifying questions about returned and undeliverable mail ballots and the follow-up process for conditional and provisional ballots. After discussion, Supervisor Jeronimo Vasquez moved to accept the canvas. The motion carried by voice vote; Chair Horstman announced it was unanimous.
The board directed county staff to transmit the certified materials to the Arizona Secretary of State for the state's canvass and to await the state's certification for candidate placement on the November ballot.
