Council approves Special Service Area 1 levy, files deadline noted

City staff recommended approval of the 2024 levy for Special Service Area (SSA) No. 1, a district created by ordinance in 1975 to raise funds for downtown maintenance. Staff told the council the SSA historically levies a flat rate (noting $1 per $100 equalized assessed value) and that on Nov. 20, 2023 the council approved a 10-year extension with a $1.50 rate commencing with the 2024 levy.
Staff stressed that the levy must be approved in time to be filed with the Knox County Clerk by the last Tuesday in December 2024. The council voted unanimously to approve the SSA levy on final reading.
