IBEW Local 855 wins setback variance to expand apprenticeship training

The Delaware County Board of Zoning Appeals approved a variance to allow the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 855 to expand a training building at 4601 South Meeker Avenue.
Dave Layman, who identified himself as IBEW Local 855's business manager, told the board the union is growing and needs to add space for its apprenticeship program. Layman said the proposed addition would match an existing training facility and would not increase encroachment into the front setback. Planning staff reviewed building dates and advised the applicants to seek the variance to legalize the existing structure and the addition; county building commissioner Tom Fouch reported no concerns.
The board approved the request unanimously, and staff said a certificate of approval will be issued so the applicant may obtain the necessary permits to move forward.
