Community groups urge county support for mentoring programs as January declared National Mentoring Month

Dewan Langley, representing the Charles Hamilton Houston Foundation, thanked the board and named a long list of mentoring partners that work locally. Langley urged commissioners to assess whether organizations funded by the county are yielding results and to consider mentoring investments during budget planning. "It works," Langley said of mentorship programs, adding that mentoring helps young people become "responsible, engaged, and successful adults."
Commissioners praised mentoring efforts and noted program examples such as We Are Kings/We Are Queens. Langley requested that commissioners remember mentoring programs when discussing upcoming budget priorities and emphasized the foundation’s focus on strategic, measurable impact.
