Durham Soil and Water Conservation District honored for 60 years of conservation work

The Durham County Board of Commissioners issued a proclamation Jan. 27 recognizing the Durham Soil and Water Conservation District’s 60th anniversary and commended the district’s work on local natural-resource stewardship.
Commissioner Michelle Burton read the proclamation noting the district’s roots dating to March 22, 1937, and its official establishment as a single-county conservation district on Feb. 2, 1965. Mark Waller, vice chair of the Durham Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisor Board, said the district has expanded beyond farming to address a range of local natural-resource concerns and highlighted the district’s educational partnerships with schools.
"I am Mark Waller," he said, introducing himself and urging support for the district’s work. Commissioners thanked the district for its programs and noted the district’s statewide recognition. The board encouraged continued support for district staffing and programming that connects students and residents with conservation practices.
The proclamation notes the anniversary date of Feb. 2, 2025, and commends the district’s contributions to watershed stewardship and local environmental education.
