A resident urged the Woodstock Select Board to open an investigation into transfers of town funds that an ordinary citizen uncovered, saying a lawyer's statement at the previous meeting indicated the transfers might have been made "without statutory" authority.
"I think there needs to be an investigation about how that happens," the resident said, adding that the municipal manager's journal entries and late transfers should be examined and that the board should ask the manager who directed the transfers.
The speaker also said the town is part of a civil lawsuit but that payments to legal defense and who controlled the defense remain separate issues. The resident characterized the discovery as the result of an ordinary citizen's review of the books and urged the board to follow up.
The Chair said they did not recall any lawyer saying funds were "illegal" and indicated a different recollection of the prior statement. The meeting minutes and future agenda items reflect the board intends to discuss attorney-fee matters further at an upcoming session on July 7.
