Durham commissioners proclaim November as Adoption Awareness and Native American Heritage months

The Durham Board of County Commissioners issued two ceremonial proclamations during the meeting. Vice Chair Burns and other commissioners read a proclamation recognizing Native American Heritage Month, noting the presence of Eno, Tuscarora, Lumbee and other tribal peoples in the region and calling on residents to observe and learn about Indigenous history and culture. Commissioners tied the Native American Heritage Month proclamation to a consent-agenda item related to Hollow Rock Nature Park and discussed opportunities to celebrate and interpret local Indigenous history in parks and signage.
Both proclamations were ceremonial recognitions with no associated budgetary action. County staff said they would post additional information on the county website and hold employee-facing events in the Human Services building.
