Durham commissioners approve several budget recognitions and moves controversial items to work session

After public comment and discussion the Board of County Commissioners approved multiple budget ordinance amendments and grant recognitions that had been on the consent agenda and on the floor for individual votes. Approved items included the recognition of $120,000 in funding for school health (item 0655), $230,000 for evidence-based behavioral-health interventions (item 0654), a Doctor Anne Wolf mini grant (item 0656), and emergency placement funding for the Department of Social Services (item 0682). The board also completed a routine approval of minutes and excused an absence for Commissioner Howerton.
Several consent items had been pulled for additional discussion. Item 24-0645 — the proposed sheriff training facility capital project — was pulled from tonight's vote and placed on the board's January work session agenda for further presentation. The board also reviewed the Edward Byron Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) application and moved that item forward for additional review; county staff clarified that this federal grant has traditionally funded special teams and in the current cycle is being used to fund a hazardous-device trailer for the bomb squad.
Board votes on the listed budget and grant recognitions passed unanimously by voice vote. Commissioners asked staff to compile public emails and questions and to share them with sheriff's staff ahead of the scheduled work session so community concerns can be addressed.
