The Durham Board of County Commissioners proclaimed October 2024 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month during its Oct. 28 meeting. Vice Chair Burns read the proclamation and highlighted the county’s commitment to supporting survivors and service providers.
Shana Carignan, the newly appointed executive director of the Durham Crisis Response Center, described DCRC’s services—24‑hour crisis helpline, emergency shelter, hospital and court accompaniment, legal assistance and counseling—and warned that public funding for domestic violence and sexual assault services has declined. Carignan told the board that "this year's allocation is down from 24,600,000, a 42 percent drop from last year's 42,000,000," and said organizations that provide life‑saving services face a critical crossroads. Vice Chair Burns urged vigilance and community reporting, noting seasonal risks and asking residents to "see something, say something." The board welcomed the DCRC’s new leadership and invited continued partnership.
