TDOT expands spot-safety and resurfacing work with recurring funds

Commissioner Reed told the committee that spot safety and pavement resurfacing were immediate beneficiaries of last year’s recurring general‑fund additions. “The 1st 1 is our spot safety program. In last year's recurring dollars, there was 13,000,000 recurring put in for spot safety,” he said.
Reed said the spot safety pot—previously $8 million annually—now has an additional $13 million recurring, enabling projects such as signal upgrades, intersection improvements and turn lanes typically in the $500,000–$2,000,000 range. He reported that the program advanced roughly 28 projects and moved a backlog of approximately 30 projects into development.
On pavement, Reed said $16,000,000 in recurring funding plus one‑time and TMA dollars allowed TDOT to let roughly 50 additional resurfacing projects and add 16 more via construction efficiencies. “There’s gonna be a lot of paving going on in the state of Tennessee,” he told members, noting these investments are aimed at addressing deterioration after severe winter storms.
Committee members praised the outcomes and cited local examples where spot improvements reduced accidents. TDOT said the investments prioritize safety and state of good repair.
