Clay County board adopts tentative $665M 2026–27 budget, sets final hearing for Sept. 10

The Clay County District Schools board on July 30 adopted a tentative 2026–27 all‑funds budget of about $665,000,000 and scheduled a final public hearing for Thursday, Sept. 10, 2026, at 5:05 p.m.
Dawn Posey, the district’s chief financial officer, presented the tentative millage rates and budget and walked the board through revenue and expenditure projections. Posey said the district’s general operating budget is ‘‘over $435,000,000’’ with additional funds for special revenue ($45,500,000), capital projects (about $122,000,000), internal service funds ($57,000,000) and debt service ($4,800,000), bringing total all funds to roughly $665,000,000. "We are, here tonight to, request your approval to adopt the 2026, 2027 tentative millage rates and budget," Posey told the board.
After public comment and brief discussion, Gilhausen moved to adopt the tentative budget and set the Sept. 10 final hearing; Alvaro seconded. The board voted unanimously, 5–0, to carry the motion. The Chair then led adoption of related resolutions for the tentative millage and tentative budget; both motions passed 5–0.
Why it matters: the tentative adoption preserves current operations while allowing additional review and required public notice steps before final adoption. Posey noted the budget is tentative and subject to change pending final enrollment counts, pending revenue adjustments and the district’s closing of FY 2025–26 accounting entries.
Next steps: the board will hold the final public hearing Sept. 10, 2026, where staff will present any revisions before the board considers final millage and budget adoption.
