Firefighters injured in Quail Valley house fire; council authorizes AFG training and equipment grant applications

Kumar told the council that a residential structure fire on June 13 in Quail Valley resulted in no civilian injuries but in two firefighter injuries — Colton Brown and Benjamin Lancaster — related to heat exhaustion and a ceiling collapse; staff reported both had been discharged from the hospital. Division Fire Chief Emilio Reyes asked the council to approve a 2025 Assistance to Firefighters Grant application to pay tuition, training, certification and overtime/backfill costs to send 12 EMTs to paramedic school, and a separate AFG equipment application to replace 12 SCBA units and 137 SCBA cylinders.
Reyes said the department had received AFG training grants in prior years (noting awards in 2023 and 2024) and that the training requests seek to expand paramedic capacity while the equipment request addresses SCBA replacement needs. Council voted unanimously to authorize submission of both grant applications and to accept awards if they are made.
