Farmingdale board hears water-treatment progress as $1M county and $1.1M federal commitments noted

Additional testing for newly monitored contaminants was estimated at about $16,000 per well.
Administrator/Clerk/Treasurer Brian P. Harty and Deputy Clerk Daniel Ruckdeschel reported that Plant 2 construction is expected to resume on or about Nov. 6, 2024, and PRI is preparing a master schedule aiming for completion of all wells by May 1, 2025. Funding commitments were detailed: "A grant of $1 million has been committed through County Legislator John Ferretti to offset costs of the new water treatment systems. A payment of $500,000 was received," the minutes state. The record also notes that "Congressman Thomas Suozzi has informed the Village that a $1.1 million commitment has been secured in the 2025/2026 Federal Budget," and clarifies this is not a reimbursement grant.
The board discussed operational impacts: D&B is evaluating repairs or replacement needs for the ground tank roof and is analyzing an antennae replacement on the elevated tank by AT&T. Officials also reported that Well 2-3 was taken offline for Phase 2 work after emerging traces of contaminants; Well 2-2 will be held for limited emergency use. The village located interconnect valves with SCWA, Bethpage Water District and South Farmingdale Water District and said those valves are ready for testing. The minutes record preparatory steps for compliance with the Lead and Copper Rule Phase 2, including draft letters for customers with galvanized pipes and purchase of Brita pitchers with NSF/ANSI-certified filters for those households.
Next steps identified by staff include completing the steel building at Well 1-3, finalizing the master schedule with PRI, continuing sampling and testing, and pursuing the reported county and federal funding sources to offset treatment costs.
