Leondres Wright, founder of Purpose Leadership Academy, addressed the council during the first public forum to thank officials for reviewing the group's charter application and to express disappointment that authorization was denied at this time.
"While we are disappointed by the decision to deny authorization at this time, we are deeply encouraged by the feedback we received and we will revise and strengthen our submission," Wright said. He described the school's focus as creating a high-quality education option for boys, particularly African American and Hispanic young men in North Las Vegas, and said the team will return with a revised proposal.
Wright also said the application had been developed with input from students, families and community leaders and pledged the group remains committed to improving the submission to meet the city's standards. The council did not discuss the specific merits of the denial on the record during public comment and no formal appeal or vote on that application was taken at the meeting.
