Parks officials say SafeKey after‑school program served more than 2,300 North Las Vegas students last year

Crystal Jackson, recreation supervisor for the City of North Las Vegas Parks and Recreation, briefed the committee on Aug. 4 about the SafeKey after‑school program and its educational components.
“SafeKey is more than just a place for students to stay before and after school,” Jackson said. “It’s an extension of the learning day providing academic support, promoting positive character development and strengthening social emotional skills.” She said SafeKey operates at 20 CCSD elementary schools and that last year it served more than 2,300 students in kindergarten through fifth grade.
Jackson described three core program components — homework support, academic enrichment (including the Apple Core reading initiative) and health and wellness — and said the program reserves spots for students who attend the host campus; students not enrolled at a site cannot attend that site’s SafeKey session. Committee members asked whether services are open to homeschooled students; Jackson said they are not, because SafeKey operates on school campuses and is limited to students enrolled at the host school.
No formal action was taken on SafeKey; the presentation was informational and committee members thanked the presenter for the update.
