Consultants present prioritized sustainability actions; city urged to build capacity and pursue grants

Parametrics consultant Grace Thurgle and city staff liaison Dylan Digby presented a prioritized sustainability and climate action strategies memo to the council on June 16, the result of nine months of work with the Sustainability Advisory Board (SAB).
Thurgle summarized the deliverables: a recommended implementation plan highlighting eight priority strategies, a draft West Linn green fleet purchasing policy, recommendations for building sustainability features for the operations complex, an inventory of funding opportunities and a tracking spreadsheet. "We reviewed 71 existing strategies and recommended 8 priority strategies, including 5 for the city to focus on and 3 that are more community-wide," she said, emphasizing greenhouse gas mitigation and feasible near-term actions given staff capacity.
Councilors asked about lighting color and wildlife impacts near parks, incentives to encourage private-sector EV charging deployment, and creating a dashboard to track city emissions. Thurgle advised increasing staff capacity as a high-leverage investment for sustained progress and recommended pursuing grants and Energy Trust incentives for near-term projects. Councilors expressed support for repair fairs and a repair services directory as community strategies.
