Police report: calls and traffic enforcement up; arrests modestly down for quarter

The Murphy Police Department told the City Council its Oct–Dec 2025 statistics show mixed trends: total calls-for-service increased slightly, officers initiated more stops and community contacts, traffic enforcement rose and citations increased, while arrests fell from 65 to 59 during the same quarter last year.
Police Chief (speaker 6) said traffic stops were up by about 500 year-over-year and that 9 of the quarter’s arrests were mental-health holds — non-criminal detentions for evaluation. The chief also reported 171 alarms during the period, and said most were false alarms at businesses; staff plan to work with businesses and alarm companies to reduce needless responses. “If an alarm goes off more than 3 times within a 12 month period, then they are subject to fine,” the chief said.
Council members asked about targeted enforcement and whether increased stops reflected focused traffic studies; the chief said the department conducted targeted traffic studies in problem locations (including the Betsy Lane area near Plano East Senior High) to improve enforcement and public education. The chief said major crashes increased and included incidents with airbag deployment and fire-department responses; staff will provide the next quarter’s statistics in April.
