Commission authorizes publication of UDO amendments to implement Kansas SB 418

The commission unanimously authorized staff on June 8 to prepare and publish amendments to the Unified Development Ordinance to implement Senate Bill 418, a state law related to residential housing, planning, development and construction that takes effect July 1, 2026.
Miss Hauer explained that the law department provided an overview to the council's Community Development Committee and that staff anticipates changes across existing code provisions as well as new sections that will be needed to align the UDO with the state statute. Commissioner Reitzes said the ordinance review committee had been briefed and was unanimously in favor of authorizing publication.
Staff will draft ordinance language, present it to the ordinance review committee, schedule a public hearing before the planning commission, and then forward recommendations to the city council for final approval.
