Lake Lure planners propose winter 2027 drawdown and expanded dredging permit

Town Manager Olivia Stewman presented a proposed drawdown schedule for Lake Lure from Jan. 1 to Mar. 31, 2027, saying the timing is intended to minimize impacts on seasonal tourism. The drawdown would typically lower the lake 12–16 feet, with a possible maximum 20-foot drawdown if approval is granted for a deep-water access ramp project.
Staff said the drawdown would allow concrete repairs to boat ramps, installation of additional ramps (including a deep-water access ramp and non-motorized ramps), mechanical dredging that would replace historical hydraulic methods, seawall repairs and sewer infrastructure improvements. The town is pursuing an expanded dredging permit beyond the historic 110-acre limit per U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recommendations; a detailed map and schedule will be presented at the June regular council meeting.
