Clarksville honors Sgt. Scott Mineo as 2024 Firefighter of the Year; colleagues remember fallen probationary firefighter

Sergeant Scott Mineo accepted the Clarksville Fire Department's 2024 Firefighter of the Year award and framed the evening as a tribute to "family," thanking colleagues and describing recent department projects.
"Family is really the theme of what I wanted to speak on tonight," Mineo said as he outlined work done over the last 18 months, including updates to hose and nozzle packages, hazmat team upgrades and a standardized EMS bag system. He credited many members of the department and described the equipment work as a long, labor-intensive effort that will benefit future crews.
Mineo also remembered Michael Mallory, a probationary firefighter who died unexpectedly last month and whose parents attended the meeting. He recounted two moments that illustrated Mallory's character, including a training scene in which Mallory, after struggling physically, addressed his crew and then returned to work: according to Mineo, Mallory said, "I have no idea what I'm doing, but I love it," and then completed the task. Mineo invited firefighters and Mallory's family forward for a brief onstage recognition.
Chief Skaggs presented the award, and council members offered condolences to Mallory's family during council comments. The ceremony preceded the council's regular business and was followed by a recess to continue the agenda.
