Applicant asks city to allow dumpster enclosure on American Way due to site access constraints

Matt Adams, the city's planning and development director, told the council staff recommended approval of PZ 20261546 to allow a dumpster and enclosure in the American Way side yard of the commercial property at 3600 American Drive. Adams said the single-story building was constructed in the 1970s and the American Way frontage is the only feasible location that still allows adequate maneuverability for construction and service trucks.
Applicant Starsha Parton spoke in favor of the application and described the operational constraint: "My name is Starsha Parton. I'm the applicant. The, the property are applying for this variance, because of the site layout doesn't allow for the trucks to safely access the back of the property." Parton asked the council to approve the variance so the existing concrete pad can be used for the enclosure.
Council did not take a final vote on the variance at the April 16 work session; the item will appear later in the agenda for decision. Council members discussed material options for the enclosure during the meeting and staff noted the UDO allows wood as an enclosure material if the council chooses to condition materiality.
