Beaufort will relocate long-standing carved face to Morale Park

Matt Golden, presenter for Beaufort County TV, reported that the city plans to relocate a weathered carved face from Boundary Street to Morale Park to preserve the piece for future generations. "The city announced on Facebook that it is moving the tree with the face before it declines naturally or is taken down by a storm," Golden said.
The program identified the carver as Hugh Patrick Knox Corey (known locally as "Driftwood") and said city manager Scott Marshall confirmed the decision. Local woodworker Mark Zidlin is scheduled to mount the carving at Morale Park at the corner of Craven and Carterette Streets before permanent installation. The segment noted prior reporting in the Buford Gazette and Island Packet about Driftwoods work and local reputation dating from the 1950s and 1960s.
