District outlines classroom and elementary addition plans; architects say early designs within budget

Architect Chuck Cole walked board members through schematic drawings for Bid Pack 4, which include a four-classroom addition, office renovations (including a relocated STEM room and enlarged office spaces), bathroom refinishes and new windows. Cole said the SD (schematic design) drawings are at 50–70% completion and that more confident cost estimates will be available at design development.
Cole and staff described some value-engineering decisions already taken on other bid packs and stressed coordination challenges across disciplines (structural, mechanical, electrical). Board members raised concerns about the placement of elementary bathrooms in hallway space rather than in-classroom access; an elected member said hallway bathrooms could create supervision and distraction issues for teachers. The architect explained that in-classroom restrooms would reduce storage and custodial spaces and require toilets to be sized to current code, creating a tradeoff. Staff committed to meeting with 4th-grade teachers during the SD/DD phases to collect feedback before finalizing layouts.
The board was told the playground and basketball court will be reorganized but not sacrificed; circulation and drop-off patterns will shift and an asphalt ribbon will provide walking access around the addition. No final contract awards are scheduled for Bid Pack 4 at this meeting; staff said they will return with more detailed cost estimates when design development is complete.
