Chamblee staff present Safe Streets for All action plan aiming to eliminate fatal and serious crashes by 2050

Chamblee staff presented a federally framed Safe Streets for All (SS4A) safety action plan and said adoption will position the city to pursue implementation funding.
Julie Owens, assistant director of public works, introduced the plan and said it is supported by the U.S. Department of Transportation SS4A grant program. Consultant Elizabeth Shin of Tool Design summarized the plan’s objectives and analysis, saying the city set a long‑term target to reduce and eliminate fatal and serious‑injury (FSI) crashes by about 2050. The data‑driven analysis reviewed the past five years and identified roughly 101 FSI crashes in that period, with collisions involving vulnerable road users (pedestrians, bicyclists) and head‑on crashes contributing heavily.
Shin said the plan develops a high‑injury network based on the crash record and a high‑risk network based on proactive indicators and that the plan includes recommended policy, program and infrastructure strategies. She noted eight of the top ten dangerous intersections fall on state routes and will require coordination with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). “Getting this plan in front of GDOT and District 7 will be very important to move this forward,” she said.
Councilmembers thanked staff and highlighted the plan’s use in advocating to GDOT for safety improvements along state routes that run through the city.
