Avon authorizes MOU with CT Office of State Archaeology for newly discovered site

The Avon Town Council voted June 5 to authorize the Town Manager to execute a Memorandum of Understanding with the Connecticut Office of State Archaeology (OSA) regarding newly discovered archaeological Site 4‑16 north of the Old Farms Road bridge. Dr. Sarah Sportman told the Council the site contains an "unbroken stratified sequence" of indigenous occupation with material stretching back roughly 9,000 years.
Dr. Sportman said controlled excavations recovered Paleo‑Indian artifacts and multiple cultural features that can support radiocarbon dating and analysis of past foodways. "It turned out some very significant material, 9,000 years of indigenous history," she said, and recommended working with the Town on curation and public education; she suggested OSA could serve as the repository while the Town explores display and stewardship options.
The Town Manager explained the MOU will set the framework for excavation protocols, reporting, insurance, artifact ownership and repository arrangements. Council members discussed the potential for state and federal protective designations and plans for community viewing and educational sessions. The Council voted in favor of the MOU to ensure professional oversight while preserving the site's integrity.
