Avon issues proclamations for Apraxia Awareness Day, Pride Month and National Day of Prayer; approves Pride flag display

The Avon Town Council approved three proclamations at its May 1 meeting: May 14, 2025 as Apraxia Awareness Day; June 2025 as LGBTQ+ Pride Month; and May 1, 2025 as National Day of Prayer. The council also approved display of the Pride flag at the Avon Free Public Library for the month of June and discussed scheduling the flag-raising to coincide with a Pride Parade proposed to end at the library on Sunday, June 1; the library’s Pride Block Party is scheduled for Thursday, June 5.
Jennifer Lano, co-owner of Speakology, provided a brief overview of apraxia and thanked the council for recognizing the issue and the role of local providers. Chairman Dan Polhamus said it is an honor for the council to recognize local businesses and providers and read the proclamations aloud. Council unanimously approved the proclamations and the Pride flag display. The motion to display the Pride flag specifies: “The Pride flag shall be displayed for the month of June in recognition of LGBTQ+ Pride Month.”
Councilor Bratton suggested minor edits to the Pride proclamation language (adding the word “bullying”), which were incorporated prior to the vote. The library director, Glenn Grube, noted the library is happy to host events, use the Community Room in case of rain, and support the flag display.
