City estimates major repairs for MLK Center roofs; manager ties fixes to levy support

City Manager Michael Johnson told council inspections found the MLK Center gymnasium roof appears about 30 years old and is leaking. A contractor offered preliminary, nonbinding cost ranges: "a quick estimate, best case scenario for the gymnasium 160,000, worst case 230 and for the back roof best case 40,000 and worst case 60,000," Johnson said.
Johnson said the front roof had been repaired in 2019 but that other roof sections remain in poor condition. He framed the repairs in the context of the upcoming parks and recreation levy, saying, "this highlights the need for this levy to pass, because without the levy, we're just going to have to band it, put a band aid on it, and kick it down the road." Councilors asked staff to check warranty and recent repair records and to provide detailed bid specifications if the council pursues replacement.
