Residents urge council to respond to ICE arrests and seek safer community practices

Sam (caller) said "over the last 6 months in our region... 235 people have been arrested by ICE or DHS" and later suggested the true number could be much higher; he and other speakers described traumatic family impacts, children missing school and businesses losing customers or closing. Greta and Laurie recounted local incidents they said involved HPD assistance to ICE and urged a local review or moratorium on police support for federal immigration operations. Callers asked the council to consider policies that reduce fear and build trust so residents feel safe accessing services and participating in civic life.
Council members acknowledged the testimony and staff said they have coordinated facilitators and community organizations to pursue dialogue and to consider what the city can do independent of federal authority. The council directed staff to continue community engagement and to report back on next steps for facilitated conversations.
