Parent commends student walkout and urges the board to weigh safety and empathy

Karina Reyes de Porto Guerrero, who identified herself as president of the Hispanic Bar and Booster Club at Arcadia High School, told the board she was “very proud” of students who participated in a Feb. 13 walkout and described the event as organized and community‑supported.
“She said: 'We walked. We went across the street. The community was helping us to to make a great march.'” Reyes de Porto Guerrero said parents and a few community members assisted students to keep them safe and that she had earlier requested additional support such as a crossing guard. She asked the board to balance legal concerns with “thinking with your heart” when responding to student activism.
Board President (presiding speaker) thanked her and said the board had heard her comments. The district’s public‑comment guidelines were read aloud before the speaker, including a reminder that board members cannot discuss content raised during public comment because of the Brown Act.
The comment came before an agenda item focused on a Longley Way Elementary learning walk and preceded several staff reports and action items on the agenda.
