Board praises Baldwin Stocker learning walk for teaching flexibility and student leadership

The Arcadia Unified School District Board of Education spent part of its Dec. 9 meeting debriefing a recent learning walk at Baldwin Stocker Elementary that district leaders said highlighted flexible instructional practices and strong student leadership.

"What you got to experience that day was a genuine glimpse of what we work so hard to achieve every day," said Dr. Brown, who thanked the board and school staff for attending and for their partnership. Board members described activities designed to increase empathy for English learners, predictable classroom routines that support small-group instruction, and opportunities for students to serve as ambassadors.

Mrs. Yee said the visit underscored the district's emphasis on predictable routines that allow teachers to form small instructional groups, and she praised an English-language lesson and other presentations showcased that day. Mr. Aang added that participating in short lessons himself helped board members better understand classroom challenges and the student experience.

The board framed the visit as an affirmation of district priorities—play-based TK learning, targeted small-group instruction (TIGS), and practices aimed at supporting a growing English learner population—rather than a formal evaluation. Dr. Brown said the visit "was a powerful affirmation of your support and your trust in us and living through our district vision."
