District expands newcomer programs, schedules large parent meeting

"They started the high school newcomer program about, I think, 3 years ago," Dr. Mendoza said, describing the Rancho model that offers an intensive year of language support before students begin traditional 9th- or 10th-grade schedules. Staff also said roughly 804 families will be invited to a newcomer parent meeting in December and that the district currently lists about 1,247 students with English-learner status. The programs include translated materials, new translators for conferences, and parent-facing training videos on PowerSchool and report cards.
Staff said the newcomer initiatives are intended to reduce initial barriers to school systems and improve early placement so students can start their academic year with appropriate supports.
