TIS reports CBEDS completion, server updates and lessons from AWS outage

TIS reported it completed the California Basic Educational Data System (CBEDS) submission ahead of schedule and performed major server updates over the weekend to mitigate security risks. The team is targeting removal of older Windows machines and migrating to Chrome by Nov. 21. Staff also described impacts from a recent AWS outage that disrupted login access to some third-party programs used in classrooms: “We were in good company,” the TIS presenter said, noting vendor-hosted login portals, not all internal systems, relied on AWS and the district was able to recover access and identify workarounds.
Board members asked whether the outage affected classroom instruction and were told most internal systems were locally hosted and resilient; the district will continue monitoring vendor dependencies and resilience planning.
