District staff presented a first reading of updates to Board Policy 35-50, the child nutrition policy, describing language to align policy with CSBA recommendations and to expand the reach and quality of school meal programs.
“Kathleen Ashworth, director of nutrition services, explained that ‘Policy 35 50 has been updated to include breakfast and lunch being provided at no cost as federal and state funding permits,’ and described additions that emphasize freshly prepared meals, locally grown food when feasible, plant-based or restricted-diet options, and taste tests/surveys for family input. Staff also noted added language on providing adequate time and space for eating and on food safety and inspection requirements.
The board asked clarifying questions about implementation and were told the proposed administrative regulation will be brought back to the board for review before final adoption; the district intends to bring the policy back on consent after that administrative regulation is finalized. No vote occurred tonight because this was a first reading.
