The Avon Landmarks Preservation Commission agreed at its Feb. 11 meeting to move forward on a 2026 Ohio Historical Marker application for Avon Center Cemetery and to participate in the next Wreaths Across America ceremony.
Commissioner Theresa Szippl told members she and Chair Cynthia Murnyack‑Czarnecki "plan to meet later in the week to review documentation and prepare for submitting the 2026 application to the Ohio History Connection." The action is intended to formalize the cemetery’s historical recognition and preserve veterans’ gravesites noted by commissioners during the discussion.
Vice‑Chair Ralph White said the December Wreaths Across America event ‘‘went smoothly’’ despite cold weather, and he recommended removing wreaths when weather permits and placing them along the cemetery driveway for collection by the Street Department, as had been done the prior year. Members indicated they would participate again; Chair Cynthia Murnyack‑Czarnecki said she would notify Julie Limbach of the Commission’s interest and asked to be contacted earlier next year for planning.
Discussion also covered upkeep of veteran markers: David Morahan is preparing sturdier posts for several stones that currently have flimsy supports. Commissioners recounted funding and placement responsibilities: the Historical Society purchased some War of 1812, Civil War, World War I and World War II markers, while the VFW paid for others. No funding amounts were specified at the meeting.
Next steps recorded in the meeting minutes include Szippl and the Chair reviewing application materials for submission to the Ohio History Connection and the Commission coordinating with local contacts for logistics around the wreath ceremony.
