Avon Tree Commission refines Arbor Day plans with children's programming, hot food and band tent

At its Feb. 11 meeting, the Avon Tree Commission discussed logistical and program changes for Arbor Day 2026 aimed at increasing family engagement and improving food service. Chair ProTem Matt Smith opened the item by noting the tent used last year as a weather contingency for the jazz band worked well and should be retained as a backup; the Commission agreed to keep that arrangement to "provide reassurance to the band, as they could perform rain or shine."
Commissioners recommended restoring the Metro Parks program for young children (Ms. Berges volunteered to contact Metro Parks) and adding more educational options. Alex Boccabella suggested replacing last year's cold pizza with grilled hot dogs and hamburgers and volunteered to help grill; the Commission also discussed offering hot chocolate or cider in addition to water. Megan Engelmann proposed expanding the tattoo activity into a craft station and adding a guided "tree walk and talk" to teach attendees about notable tree species and planting techniques. The Commission agreed to continue developing these elements ahead of Arbor Day.
