Belgrade library rolls out ‘Library of Things’ collection, adds memory kits

Erica Eckbert, a library staff member introduced by the director, presented the library’s new "Library of Things" collection and a supporting webpage and brochure. She said the collection will list each kit with a photo, description, checkout length, replacement cost and a link to the catalog so patrons can place holds. "So everything on our handout is available other than a few items," Eckbert said, describing additions including memory kits, extra ukuleles, a larger telescope, a larger Connect 4 and a Jenga set.

Eckbert explained the memory kits are themed sets for patrons coping with memory loss: "So, it's for people who are, have Alzheimer's...these kits are themed...they have picture cards in them, they have a DVD that also cycles through the pictures, they also have activity cards in them," she said. Staff reported early circulation of instruments and audio/visual kits. Board members responded positively to the presentation and to the brochure materials connected to the collection; the board approved the brochure information later in the meeting.

Practical details shown to the board included an attached barcode/info page for each kit listing contents and counts, and a note that items should be returned to the front desk rather than a drop box. The presentation also previewed a planned web page and a physical flyer display near the guitars in the conference/classroom area so patrons can find and reserve items.
