Safety Director Dan Chafin brought an earlier draft of a sidewalk snow and ice removal ordinance (97.02) to the committee for initial discussion and asked whether members wanted to rework or retain parts of the draft. He said Section E of the draft allowed the City to remove accumulated snow/ice: “The City may remove, or cause to be removed the accumulated snow, ice or debris on any sidewalk …” but cautioned vendors generally decline this service.
Chafin said the City’s Street Department staffing and local vendor availability limit the practicality of the City performing sidewalk removals; absent a reliable vendor the draft relied on fines to encourage compliance (the draft referenced a $250 administrative fee). Committee members suggested focusing on enforceable language and coordinating with the Law and Zoning offices to ensure the ordinance was feasible and enforceable before advancing it.
