Commissioners approve state-approved rate increases for SDR debris contract; county expects FEMA reimbursement

Haywood County commissioners voted to accept an amendment to the disaster debris removal agreement with Southern Disaster Recovery LLC (SDR) to align county pricing with a state- and FEMA-approved revised schedule following Hurricane Helene. Deputy County Manager Chris Boyd said the state negotiated the rate changes because prior rates were not competitive enough to attract contractors for large projects.
"This is accepting the revision to the contract that the state and FEMA has approved with SDR," Chris Boyd said, noting the amendment increases what the county will pay SDR but that FEMA reimbursement is expected to follow. He said the amendment is effective going forward and not retroactive; Haywood County had moved about 25,000 cubic yards of debris (approximately 100 loads) to date. Commissioners approved the amendment unanimously after confirming the changes were approved at the state and federal level.
